How to install a graphics card

To begin with, if you need to install a new video card on your computer, it is recommended to remove all the drivers on the old one. Actually, I neglect this step, and I never had to regret it, but be aware of the recommendation. You can remove drivers through the "Add or Remove Programs" in the Windows Control Panel. You do not need to remove the built-in drivers (which come bundled with the OS) through the device manager.

The next step is to turn off the computer and power supply, pull out the cable and open the computer case (unless you are assembling it at the moment) and remove the video card. Firstly, it is usually bolted (sometimes by a latch) to the back of the computer case, and secondly, by a latch at the port for connecting to the motherboard (photo below). First, get rid of the first item, then the second.

If you are not assembling a PC, but only changing the video card, it is very likely that you have as much dust in your case as I did in the first photo in this manual. It will be great if you clean everything from dust before proceeding. At the same time take care of compact laying of wires, use plastic collars. If you had to disconnect some wire, do not forget which one, then to return everything to its original state.

Installing a graphics card

If your task is to change the video card, then the question of which port to install it in you should not arise: in the same one where the old one stood. If you assemble the computer yourself, then use the port that is faster, as a rule they are signed: PCIEX16, PCIEX8 - in our case, select the one that is 16.

You may also need to remove one or two shutters from the back of the computer case: on my case they are unscrewed, but on some cases it is necessary to break off the aluminum shutter (be careful, it is easy to cut them with sharp edges).

Installing a video card in the desired slot on the motherboard is simple: push it lightly and it should snap into place. It’s impossible to mix up the slots somehow, installation is possible only in compatible one. Fasten the video card immediately to the back of the case with bolts or other provided mounting.

Almost all modern video cards require additional power and are equipped with special connectors for this. They must be connected to the appropriate source from the computer power supply. They may look different than on my video card and have a different number of contacts. It’s also impossible to connect them incorrectly, but sometimes the wire from the source may not have all 8 contacts at once (what my video card requires), but one wire - 6, the other - 2, then they are arranged accordingly (this can be seen on the fragment of the photo).

Here, in general, that’s all: now you know how to install the video card correctly, you did it and you can assemble the computer, then connect the monitor to one of the ports and turn on the power.

About graphics card drivers

Drivers for a video card are recommended to be installed immediately from the website of the official manufacturer of the graphic chip: NVidia for GeForce or AMD for Radeon. If for some reason you cannot do this, you can first install the video card drivers from the disk that comes with it, and only then update it from the official site. Important: do not leave those drivers that the operating system installs, they are only for you to see the desktop and use the computer and do not use all the functions of your graphics adapter.

Installing the latest drivers on a graphics card is one of the most useful things (when compared to updating any other drivers), which can improve performance and get rid of problems in games.
