What are cereals?

All types of cereal products are a good source of carbohydrates, the content of which can reach 60-70%. At the same time, cereals contain a small amount of protein (7-13%) and fat (0.7-7%).

Although the content of basic nutrients (proteins, fats and carbohydrates) in different types of cereals is approximately the same, different types of cereals and flour can differ significantly in their levels of vitamins and mineral salts. It contains a large amount of plant fiber (dietary fiber). Fiber is essential for the normal functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. It stimulates intestinal motility, increases the volume and reduces the density of feces, contributing to the prevention of constipation, has a positive effect on the growth of beneficial intestinal microflora. Being a sorbent, fiber helps to eliminate harmful substances from the body. In addition, the high content of dietary fiber in buckwheat ensures the timely appearance of a feeling of fullness, which prevents overeating and, as a result, obesity.

Porridge made from corn grits usually requires long cooking, so it was rarely used in the diet of young children before. However, modern instant corn cereals do not require long cooking and are easily digestible.

Oat groats. Contains a relatively large amount of vegetable protein. It is rich in vitamins B1, B2, necessary for the normal functioning of the nervous system. Oatmeal is the "champion" in the content of calcium and phosphorus, which is necessary for the growing body to form bone tissue and teeth. It contains a lot of magnesium and iron. Oatmeal contains the largest amount of vegetable (healthy) fats and is rich in fiber.

Millet. This cereal is obtained from millet grains. Millet is rich in protein and fiber, as well as B vitamins.

Barley and barley groats. They are obtained from crushed barley. If barley groats are more suitable for children from 1.5 to 2 years (its degree of grinding is higher), then barley porridge is prepared for babies older than 3 years. Semolina. It is produced from wheat grains after they are cleaned of the upper layers (bran). Semolina has high calorie content and is well absorbed by the children's body. That is why semolina has long been included in the list of basic products for baby food in our country. However, at present they do not recommend offering semolina dishes to children under 1 year old. At an older age, it is advisable to use semolina in a limited amount. Such recommendations are due to the fact that semolina contains a large amount of gluten vegetable protein, which determines its highly allergenic properties.

Semolina in large quantities contains phytin - a complex organic substance that binds calcium in the intestine, reducing its absorption by the child's body. Semolina contains much less useful minerals than, for example, buckwheat and oatmeal. The predominance of this cereal over others in the diet can lead to overweight due to its high calorie content. Semolina is poor in plant fibers, which, on the one hand, is a minus. But on the other hand, due to this property, semolina is indispensable in the nutrition of children who underwent surgery on the abdominal organs (in the postoperative period) when a therapeutic, chemically and physically sparing diet is prescribed (and cell chat, as mentioned above, irritates the mucous membrane intestines and stimulates the motility of the gastrointestinal tract).

Which grits to choose?

For the nutrition of children, it is necessary to choose cereals, taking into account not only the baby's age, but also his state of health.

Acquaintance with grain products always begins with cereals that do not contain gluten vegetable protein. Gluten-free cereals include buckwheat, rice and corn.
