Which is better - terrarium for eublefar or a plastic container? Both options are quite acceptable. Both have their pros and cons in the content of eublefars.
Terrarium - more aesthetic, living picture in the interior of your home. Gives the owner space for the embodiment of his vision of a piece of nature. Transparent glass is more convenient for pet observation and photography. Cons - heavy and beating.
The container is lightweight, mobile, easy to clean, you can put several containers on top of each other, not breaking. Cons - Not so visually spectacular, it is not very convenient to observe the inhabitants due to unclear plastic, photographs are only a top view. But, I repeat, all this is a matter of taste and individual preferences of the owner. We will proceed from the needs of the tenant.
Eublefaras need a horizontal house with a minimum size of about 40 * 30 * 30 for one adult or for a couple of three kids. On the territory of 50 * 40 * 40 and more, 2-3 adult individuals can be kept. Ventilation holes required! We will talk about the arrangement of the terrarium in the Terrarium section.
Thermocover for terrarium
Eublefaras are reptiles, which means that they always need warmth, namely ours - lower heating. We buy a 5-7 watt heating thermal mat for the terrarium and put it under the bottom of the terrarium so that it occupies from 1/3 to 1/4 of the floor area. The gecko himself will choose whether he wants to warm his tummy after eating or sleep in the cool.
Measure the temperature inside the terrarium at the heating point (where the mat is) - it should be between 28-32 ° C.
How to cover the bottom of the terrarium for eublefar? We keep babies up to six months only on napkins! Next is your choice. There are 3 main areas of leopard gecko content:
- continue to cover the bottom with paper towels,
- lay a synthetic rug,
- translate to sand.
Consider the pros and cons.
Paper towels are very simple and convenient to clean up, it is easy to monitor the state of health by excrement, they are well absorbed, hygienic, environmentally friendly, they are completely free of odors during cleaning, and lizards do not eat wipes.
The content of eublefar on a synthetic rug looks beautiful, especially if it is part of the interior of the species terrarium, and its gecko will not swallow either. The question of excrement absorption remains open to me. Plus it is still plastic or rubber, hygiene, environmental friendliness and ease of cleaning, I personally also doubt. Maybe I just “don’t know how to cook it”?))
Sand is the most controversial soil. Yes, lizards in nature do not eat it, but domestic eublefaras are capable of such a thing ... Sand clogs their gastrointestinal tract and a very, very sad fate awaits their pet ... After I had an adult well-fed female eublefara gobbled up a metal bead, having previously sniffed it and licking it, I prefer not to risk the health of pets and urge you to do the same.
Pet safety is your peace of mind.
House for eublefara
We will take into account that shelter houses are important for eublephars, therefore, for their comfortable living, let there be at least as many shelters (for example, coconut houses) in your terrarium, how many residents there are +1 additional house. More is possible, less is wrong! Residents will fight and divide the territory, which is not interesting for you and me - wounds on the body and bitten tails are not our goal, right?
A wet chamber is usually placed one on one terrarium. Although, if the territory allows you, put 2 wet chambers - one on a warm territory (where the heating mat is located), and the second on a cool one. You yourself will see what kind of wet chamber your eublefares choose. Mine always prefer warm.
A wet camera is necessary for normal molting of geckos, and it is used by some individuals just constantly, they like to sleep there)))
A shallow bowl with drinking water (pure, such as you drink yourself) may not be very small, because eublefares sometimes like to get into it and “take a bath” - rarely, but it happens. Plus, sufficient humidity will be maintained. Change the water daily or every other day, monitor the purity of the water.
Calcium must be in the terrarium with the content of spotted eublefar! A small bowl in which you pour calcium and your beauties themselves eat as much calcium as they need. Do not forget that each organism has its own needs, so provide eublefar with constant access to calcium. What calcium is worth buying for eublefar is discussed in a separate article. There we read about vitamins for reptiles.
Have you already thought about what you will feed your pet? Where will you buy it? Make sure that there is always feed supply in advance! (read about feeding here)
All! The basic part about the content of eublefars is already there, and our pet can safely move to your home.
Then I recommend reading “Features of the behavior of eublefars” - what you should expect from your pet, and what not to expect.
For keeping eublefar, classic terrariums for keeping reptiles (glass, combined chipboard + glass and others) are suitable. Recommended minimum sizes for keeping 1 adult 40x30x30 (LxWxH). However, for the eublefar itself, from the point of view of comfort, a plastic container with suitable sizes is quite suitable. The sizes for adult eublefar have been written earlier, for ages up to 6-8 months a smaller size is suitable (focus on a volume of 10-15 liters). The key to preparing a home is proper diagonal ventilation (on the one hand below, on the other on the top). In more detail about this there is a separate article on my site, I recommend to look. The appearance of the prepared and populated container is visible in Figures 1 and 2, respectively.
Fig. 1. Preparing a Container for Check-In
Fig. 2. A container with everything you need
2. Heating mat
Under 1/3 of the container, it is necessary to provide heating up to 30-32 gr. C. This is necessary, first of all, to maintain the correct digestion and the necessary level of activity of our pet. In general, there are different ways to create a “warm corner” for a pet (thermal cord, thermal mat, heating with various lamps, etc.), but for the container, as in my example, I definitely recommend a heating mat. Examples of my options are shown in Fig. 3. At night, the heating must be turned off. For babies up to 4 months, you can leave the heating around the clock.
Fig. 3. Variants of thermal mats for 5 W and 7 W with Ali Express
Options for the manufacture of shelters can be very different. Basic requirements for shelter:
- The size of the shelter should allow your pet to accommodate in it, but the shelter should not be large, eublefar should “feel” the walls,
- Quick access to your pet if necessary. An ideal shelter is a shelter without a bottom, not attached to the terrarium itself. You should be able to get eublefar from shelter at any time without difficulty
- Safety for the pet: no sharp edges, no harmful chemical composition, etc.
The ideal shelter, in my opinion, is half a coconut, rice. four.

Origin and description
The leopard gecko (Eublepharis macularius) was described by the English zoologist Edward Blyth in 1854. The insectivorous lizard hails from Pakistan, Iran and Afghanistan. Lives in the desert, leads a nocturnal lifestyle. As an endangered species, the leopard gecko is not listed.
Eublefar is a lizard with many spots or no spots at all, depending on the variant of this species. If there are several color variations of a leopard gecko with a typical pattern, as well as albinos, blizzards, tangerines and other popular varieties. Young geckos have no spots yet, but they appear as they grow older.
Leopard geckos grow up to 20 cm in length and weigh 150-220 grams. Care for lizards of any variety of this species requires the same. Leopard geckos live 5-7 years, and with good care up to 20 years.
You can distinguish a male from a female by a ledge at the base of the tail. In the female, this is one long bulge; in the male, it is divided into two parts.
Head the animal is large, pointed, connected to the body by a short thick neck. At the end of the muzzle is a pair of nostrils. There are large shields on the chin. On the sides of the head, holes in the auditory canals are visible, covered with eardrums.
Eyes the lizards are large, oval and convex, which is typical for nocturnal animals. Pupils in the form of a slit with a straight edge, located vertically. Unlike many geckos, the spotted leopard eublefar has moving eyelids and a thin blinking membrane. In the back of the upper eyelid there are eyelash-like outgrowths.
Mouth voluminous, its corners are bent a little up. For this, eublefara is often called the "smiling gecko." This “good mouth” is filled with 100 small teeth that are designed to hold and briefly chew prey. Teeth are on both jaws and attach to the inside of the bone. This connection is fragile (pleurodont), therefore, the teeth are alternately replaced with new ones every 3-4 months, while young growing teeth are next to the old ones.
Body spotted leopard eublefar is covered with soft to the touch, but very durable skin. In nature, it protects the lizard from injuries that can cause grains of sand, sharp stones and dry clay. On top of the skin is covered with small scales, among which large cone-shaped scales stand out. These "warts" perform a thermoregulatory function. They contribute to the accumulation of heat and prevent its loss.
The body is thick and slightly flattened. Compared to the live-bearing and fast-moving lizard, eublefar seems awkward. He moves slowly, flipping from side to side.
Tail reptiles thick in the middle, spiky, decorated with 2-3 lilac rings. It serves as a storehouse of adipose tissue. Since spotted leopard eublefars live in arid areas, they use this stock in the dry season as a source of water and in the cold season as nutrients. Lizards can drop all or part of the tail. Especially often this happens to young individuals. From fear, pain or to protect themselves from persecution, they contract special muscles that contribute to autotomy.
An autotomy is the rejection by an animal of a limb or organ.
In young lizards, the tail grows quickly, in old ones, the regeneration process drags on for a long time. The new tail will not become as long as it was before, but it will be thicker. It differs in color, the scales on it are smaller, and the tubercles are absent.
If in nature the tail is discarded before wintering, then the animal is left without “strategic” reserves, it can become ill and even die. Usually eublefars return to the place where they lost such a nutritious part of their body, and eat it.
Legs reptiles of medium length, cylindrical, with five extended fingers rounded at the end, devoid of “suction” pads. There are tubercles on the subdigital plates. All fingers of each foot are rounded, equipped with thin sharp claws that help the animal climb vertical soft surfaces, such as branches and leaves.
At the edges of the fingers there are no cloves (sand skis) characteristic of lizards living in deserts. The axillary depressions of the anterior legs of the spotted leopard eublefar are transformed into deep skin pockets, their purpose has not yet been clarified.
Young reptiles painted in yellowish or flesh tones with dark stripes on the body and a dark brown “cap” on the head. On the cap in the area of the eyes and near the toe there is a light pattern that looks like a bird’s footprint. By the age of 8 months, eublefaras become adults, and then their color changes.
In mature animals, a pattern of brown spots is placed on a light gray or light yellow background, more saturated on the body. On the underside of the tail and head, the spots are less bright, and on the abdomen they are not at all. The combination of numerous dark brown spots and light thin gaps between them creates a mesh pattern on the head. A light streak, more or less free from spots, stretches along the spine. The belly of the leopard eublefar is pale pink, the sides are white.
And here is how they work sensory organs lizards:
- Leopard eublefars have well-developed hearing. It allows you to detect prey during the hunt.
- Night animals see only black and white colors. But vision helps them remember the place of egg laying and constantly return to it to leave new offspring.
- Eublefars have developed taste buds: animals are well distinguished by sweets, but are not very sensitive to bitter.
- The sense of smell is less developed than other senses, but at a short distance eublefaras can search for objects by smell. Lizards can breathe freely, even if there is food in their mouth, as reptiles have inner nostrils located next to the pharynx. In addition, lizards have a vomeronasal organ, or Jacobson's organ, which is located on the upper palate. This is the peripheral part of the additional olfactory system of some vertebrates. Thanks to him, reptiles smell food in their mouths, and also recognize the smells that surround them. To determine what is around, the lizard often protrudes its tongue, the signal from which enters the olfactory cavity (Jacobson’s organ).
- There are suggestions that eublefars are guided by the Earth's magnetic field in the same way that birds can do it.
- In danger of eublefara make hissing sounds.
Varieties of eublefars
To date, five main types of such geckos are distinguished:
- Iranian. Lizards belonging to this species are the largest and have long legs.
- Hardwick. This type of eublefar is called the East Indian spotted. Until now, it has been poorly studied. The features include the presence of reddish-brown stripes on the back. In case of danger, such lizards make piercing sounds.
- Afghan. Some scientists do not distinguish these lizards in a separate form, but consider them a subspecies.
- Turkmen. Such eublefares are listed in the Red Book, since they are on the verge of extinction. Features include the ability to create loud sounds and the presence of scales. On the tail and back of the reptile are yellow transverse stripes.
- Leopard. The most popular type for keeping at home, which has a spotty color.
5. Calcium and Vitamins
The presence of calcium with D3 and the vitamin complex in your pet's diet is a prerequisite for his health. There are 2 approaches in this matter:
- The use of a complex preparation that immediately contains all the necessary substances, for example REPASHYCalciumPlus . I highly recommend this approach to beginners, convenient and practical. If you have 1-2 eublefar, one jar is enough for a couple of years, for sure, or even more: o) This medication is used at each feeding (pour a part of the preparation into a separate small container, roll off feed insects in it before each feeding)
- Separate use of calcium with D3 at each feeding and once a week use of a mixture of vitamins and calcium (1 part of vitamins to 2 parts of calcium). Example: calcium preparations Zoo Med Repti Calcium + D3 and a complex of vitamins ZooMedReptivitewithout D3
Fig. 6. Recommended Drug REPASHY Calcium Plus
6. Timer for automatic on / off heating and lighting
For a comfortable existence, eublefar needs elevated temperatures in warm coal during the day, and at night cooler without heating (23-26 C). You can, of course, turn off the heating every evening, and turn it on in the morning. But, believe me, this quickly bothers and you begin to forget to do it. There are inexpensive (400-600 rubles) assistants to facilitate this task - automatic on / off timers for an electrical appliance. They themselves, at the right time, stop supplying voltage to the heating mat, and in the morning they turn on the heating themselves. For example, I have turned off the heating at 22-30 and the inclusion at 9-00. Examples of such timers are shown in Fig. 7.
Fig. 7. Options for automatic on / off timers. I personally have a model that is on the left in the picture.
The nuances of the content of spotted eublefar
Before you get a leopard gecko, you need to prepare a terrarium for it. The size of the reptile's home will depend on how many eublefars you decide to purchase. For one reptile, an aquarium with a size of 30x30x30 is perfect, if there are three reptiles, then you need to choose a larger aquarium, optimally 50x30x30.
At the bottom of the terrarium, you need to place branches, pebbles, places for shelter, as well as living plants.
To make your pet feel as comfortable as possible, provide eublefar with the necessary conditions. The air temperature in the terrarium should not be lower than 24 ° C during the day, and not lower than 20 ° C at night. To do this, you will need to install fluorescent lamps inside the terrarium.
The easiest way is to keep one leopard gecko, but if you plan to breed exotic pets, do not forget that males are quite aggressive animals. For breeding, it is best to choose a family of one male and four females.
Of course, a larger volume will only be better, especially if you plan to breed them. The cover glass on the terrarium can not be set, since eublefars do not have the ability to climb on smooth surfaces, they have undeveloped suction cups on their feet like other types of geckos. However, if you have cats and dogs at home, it’s better to cover the terrarium, as they pose a serious danger to geckos. Well, do not forget that crickets and other insects can also escape from it, and you hardly need them in the house.
A few sexually mature females get along quite well (if they are about the same size), but the males are pugnacious and will fight. The male and several females also get along, but it is better not to hold them together until they have reached sexually mature sizes (about 45 grams for both the male and the female).
If you have acquired a young couple, and plan to keep them together, then it is better to grow separately. Why? Males grow faster, and larger than females, especially if you grow them together. The larger male is more active and aggressive, he eats faster, often takes food from the female, or simply terrorizes her. In addition, he used to become sexually mature and begins mating with a female who is often not ready. Females weighing 25-30 grams often lay eggs, but they are still too small. This shortens their lifespan, is stressful and reduces potential.
If you grow several females together, remember that sometimes one of them grows faster, and can take away food from the goods. If the sizes are very different, then it is better to plant them in different terrariums.
7. Substat for terrarium
The logical question is what to put on the bottom of the container / terrarium with the content of eublefar (substat). If your pet is young (up to 6 months) - I recommend keeping it on disposable paper towels that simply fit in one layer on the bottom of the container and, as they become soiled, change to new ones.
If eublefar is an adult, then the substate options depend on where you plan to feed:
- Feeding is carried out in the main container-terrarium. In this case, the main requirement for the substrate is its safety, since eublefar can (and will do this) swallow litter particles. The best options for this case are disposable paper towels, a grass rug, and large (1-2 cm) pebbles.
- If feeding is carried out in a separate container (as I do), then sand, small pebbles (see. Fig. 2) and other decorative bases can be used.
With any option, keep in mind - eublefar crap, albeit in one place, but it can soak into your base: o) In the case of sand, part of the soiled sand is removed and everything is beautiful again.
Any inexpensive drinker from a pet store, for example, options for rodents, will do. The main requirement is its stability.
Fig. 8. Idle drinker for eublefar
9. Feed insects
Insects are used for feeding:
- Crickets (main food)
- Cockroaches Turkmen, marble, Argentine, etc. (main feed)
- Zofobas (as bait)
- Brazhnitsy geese (as a bait)
You can use both live insects and frozen ones. For feeding, it is enough to have 1 type of main feed. If possible, pamper with other insects from the list, if this is not possible - not scary. In the near future I plan a separate article about the ideal feed object for eublefar. Visit my site, subscribe to the youtube channel.
On the YouTube channel, you can watch the material in this article in a compact video format:
How to feed spotted eublefar?
In nature, “leopards” mainly prey on insects, but sometimes they can profit from their own kind, only smaller in size, relatives. The favorite food of spotted eublefars at home is crickets (brownies, bananas, two-spotted). The Turkmen cockroach (Shelfordella tartara) has also proved itself to be a good feed object, since it is very soft and reproduces easily, without requiring special conditions. Eating it, eublefar even squints his eyes in pleasure. Marble (Nauphoeta cinerea) and Madagascar (Gromphadorhina portentosa) cockroaches are well eaten.
The flour worm (Tenebrio molitor) can also be included in the diet of eublefars. Before serving, it is advisable to feed insects with various greens, and then sprinkle with vitamins for reptiles or calcium powder (this is especially important for females during the breeding season). Some individuals will not refuse newborn mice, but often they should not be given. Do not forget that a gecko is still an insectivorous reptile. Various fruits, berries and other vegetation do not eat spotted eublefars. Feeding the leopard gecko is very exciting.
It is advisable to present food to him with his hands or with tweezers: in this way the reptile gets its portion and does not swallow stones during the hunt, and you will be sure that there are no cockroaches that could escape and lead a wild lifestyle in your apartment. Moreover eublefar will be pleased to accept the proposed feed in this form. In addition, hand-feeding will speed up the process of taming the animal. "Hunting" for food, the gecko rises on outstretched legs and briefly taps its tail. In summer, in the meadow for lizards, various Orthoptera from the families of grasshoppers (Tettigoniidae) and locusts (Acrididae) can be caught. This should be done away from agricultural fields and gardens, as insects can be poisoned with pesticides.
If you feed grasshoppers, then crush your head before feeding large individuals, because grasshoppers have strong jaws that can injure your pet. Eublefarov older than a year are fed 2-3 times a week. An adult gecko can eat an average of 5 crickets per feed. Youth feeding patterns are different. Very small geckos under the age of 1 month are fed 1-2 times a day - they need only 1 cricket for one feeding. Lizards from 1 to 3 months of age are fed once a day - give 2 crickets. At the age of 3 to 6 months, eublefars are fed every other day - an average of 1-3 large crickets per feeding. And for animals from six months to a year it is enough to give food 2-3 times a week in the amount of 3-4 large crickets at a time. In the terrarium, there must be a drinker with water. It is good to use a Petri dish in this case, which has low edges. Water must be renewed at least every other day.
Eublefaras are cold-blooded lizards, and to digest food they need warmth. Bottom heating will be the best option for this. To do this, you can use a thermal cord, thermal mat or shoe dryer.
The temperature in the heating area should not exceed 32 degrees. It can be adjusted using a thermometer and soil thickness when installing heating appliances. Heating is placed in the corner of the terrarium, “heating” from 25 to 33 percent of the bottom area, while achieving a temperature gradient in the lizard’s dwelling. At room temperature not lower than 22 degrees, heating for the night can be turned off. Babies up to three months need constant heating.
In the lizard’s home, there should be several shelters in warm and cold corners. And eublefar itself will already make the choice of a more comfortable place. And also do not forget about the necessary section of the terrarium - a wet chamber, which should be located in a warm corner, where the animal will molt. About it will be told a little later.
Can be used inexpensive, practical and environmentally friendly sheltersmade from half a coconut, which have proven themselves perfectly and are liked by Zblefar. And also it is not a problem to order decor or shelter from the master or to do it yourself.
As a soil in the dwelling of the eublefar, an embankment is made of coarse pebbles and stones, but not sea and river, since they are slippery for the pet's paws. To prevent the animal from accidentally swallowing pebbles, their size must be appropriate. It is advisable not to use ordinary sand, otherwise eublefar will have digestion problems if swallowed.
For terrariums, special carpets are very suitable. It is safe, beautiful and convenient when cleaning the animal’s home. Any soft door mat is also perfect. Toddlers need to be kept exclusively on paper towels or napkins.
For a drinking bowl, any low and small capacity is suitable. Eublefara lizards love to drink clean defended waterlapping her tongue like kittens. And they are also happy to lick droplets of fresh water, and with daily spraying, there is no particular need for a drinking bowl, although it will never be superfluous.
The drinker can be designed to match the style of the terrarium or make the simplest of the available items. Alkaline water is considered the most useful in its composition.
Gecko eublefar animal is twilight and therefore does not need lighting. For him, a regular 25–40 watt incandescent mirror lamp is quite suitable for simulating solar heating. Although the best option is bottom heating with a thermal mat, thermal stone or thermal cord.
Ultraviolet radiation is also a necessary element that provides the synthesis of vitamin D 3 in an animal. To do this, use special ultraviolet lamps. Although, if you add the necessary vitamins and minerals to the pet’s food and provide it with lower heating, then you won’t need an ultraviolet lamp. The fact is that the vitamin complex in combination with the correct thermal regime provides the animal with vitamin D 3 in full.
It is important to know that eublefars - albinos do not like bright light. Therefore, when using lamps, this circumstance must be taken into account and, if possible, consult the appropriate specialist.
Humidity in a pet's home should not exceed 50 percent. To increase the humidity to the desired value, if the apartment is too hot, it is necessary to periodically spray the soil in one corner of the terrarium, especially in the absence of a wet chamber.
The old skin of the domestic reptile should completely go down during molting and this process needs to be controlled, otherwise the pet, under certain circumstances, may stop hearing, remain without fingers, etc. Therefore, you need to know that adults molt once within 1-2 months, adolescents - 1 time in a two-week period. And this may not even be immediately noticed, since the reptile eats up the old skin after molting. Due to the rapid growth, babies molt much more often than their brothers.
If you can contain males and females and you have space to breed them, you can get as many offspring as you have females. The main thing is to be able to attach this offspring.
Determining the sex of leopard geckos younger than 3-4 months is visually very difficult. In adults of 6-9 months, determining sex is quite easy. Males are usually a little more bulky and have a wider head and neck than females. Also, the male has a pair of bulges behind the anus at the base of the tail. The female has no bulges.
If you are not sure which gender your lizard is, add another lizard to the terrarium. If both geckos wag their tails from side to side, most likely they want to rush at each other, which means they are two males.
It is recommended to take females for breeding that have reached a weight of at least 115 grams, but the larger the female, the better.
The process of mating reptiles is tough and you might even think that the male attacks the female. He nibbles her tail, and then slowly moves up her body until she reaches her neck.
A female spotted gecko lays one or two eggs at a time. To obtain predominantly females in the offspring, the incubation temperature should be 25-28C, for mixed offspring 29-32C, to obtain males 31-32.3C. Note that the higher the incubation temperature, the more offspring will be more colorful, and eggs hatch faster. The incubation period is 46-60 days.
Young lizards will not eat until their first molt. The gecko needs to eat discarded skin, as it contains the vitamins and nutrients that the lizard needs. After that, young monitor lizards begin to eat small, the size of a pinhead, crickets and small worms.
With proper care, reptiles rarely get sick, but there is a list of diseases that can occur in such lizards. Pay attention to the behavior and condition of your pet in order to determine the presence of the disease in time and visit the veterinarian.
- A spotted leopard eublefar can be ill with rickets, which is characterized by the curvature of the paws, and at the next stage the shape of the spine is already changing. With such a disease, coordination of movements is disturbed, and convulsions are observed.
- A dangerous and almost incurable infection is cryptosporidiosis. It is characterized by the following symptoms: a skinny tail, a black spot on the chest, indicating an enlarged liver, and watery spots, indicating the accumulation of a large amount of fluid in the abdominal cavity.
- Eublefar can suffer from parasites that infect lizards because they eat living things. To avoid this, carry out prophylaxis using the ReptiLife or Profender drug.
Vitamins for Eublefar
The most popular insectivorous reptile supplement is REPASHY Calcium Plus. This is a mixture of calcium, vitamins, proteins, fats, fiber and other important substances. When adding this complex, you can not use any other additives. REPASHY helps to increase the nutritional value of insects, and the reptile receives all the substances necessary for health. Leopard eublefar should eat the supplement every day. It is necessary to put insects in a bag, add powder and shake everything well, and only then give reptiles food.
When acquiring eublefar, it is important to verify its health. For this need to carefully examine itto check if it meets the following criteria:
- Young and adult individuals should have a thick, long, powerful tail. It is there that the lizard stores all the nutrients accumulated by the body. If the tail is not thick enough and long, this means that the animal’s nutrition was poor, and the previous owner did not watch it well. This does not apply to small, recently hatched geckos that are actively growing.
- Sex can be determined only at the age of six months. Therefore, the second and subsequent geckos need to be bought no earlier than this period, so as not to place several males in one terrarium.
- The abdomen should be quite thick, but not bloated, otherwise a disease or pregnancy may be suspected. Hanging sides indicate obesity.
- The behavior of the lizard should be energetic - not lethargic and lethargic. She should not stagger when walking.
- On the surface of the skin should not be small abrasions and scratches. Their presence indicates that the owner kept several males together.
It is worth remembering that a gecko acquired by a young one can subsequently change its color. Therefore, if the appearance of eublefara is important, it is better to buy an adult.
Enemies of spotted eublefar in nature
Lizards have many enemies. Many birds prey on them: storks, herons, buzzards, eagles, loons, hawks, kestrels, secretaries, eagle owls, kites, owls, magpies, crows. No less terrible enemies are various snakes, many of which feed only on lizards. Mammals also enjoy their meal: chori, badgers, foxes, wyverns, mongooses, hedgehogs and others. Monitor lizards eat smaller lizards, including eublefars.
Reptiles flee from an attack or flee motionless, hiding. The latter tactic is especially effective against snakes hunting only for moving prey.
Eoplefaras can defend themselves by assuming a bullying or attacking position. They bite the enemy and clutch his skin with a death grip.
In addition to fading, passive protection methods also include:
- autotomy (tail dropping). After falling off, the tail of the eublefar can twitch for another 30 minutes, distracting the attention of the predator and allowing the lizard to slip away,
- waiting for the most active day for predators in shelters,
- adaptive and protective coloring.
Where to buy a leopard gecko?
It is best to make a purchase at a specialized pet store or from trusted breeders. Be sure to inspect the pet before buying, check the weight of the reptile at the seller, observe how the eublefar moves. The sick pet is given hollow cheeks, the ribs protrude from the lizards and the tail is very thin.
It is very important that before your purchase your lizard should be in the terrarium alone. If there were other spotted eublefars along with the gecko, check to see if your pet's neighbors have diseases or parasites, or if they have tails or color.
Leopard gecko feeding
Eublefaras are insectivorous; they feed on small invertebrates. Feed your pet every 2-3 days. If you have several geckos, carefully watch that everyone gets food.
Important! Geckos need only live insects. Reptiles feed on cockroaches, flies, worms, crickets, earthworms, small spiders.
The terrarium needs to be kept clean. The fact is that spotted eublefars are very susceptible to germs and dirt, which can accumulate in their homes. Clean the terrarium at least once a week. Остатки пищи удаляйте ежедневно.
Be carefull!
